Avant Bard Theatre in Arlington, VA is now accepting play submissions for the fifth annual Scripts In Play Festival, scheduled to perform during the 2020-21 season. Submissions are accepted now on a rolling basis through June 15, 2020.
About Avant Bard
Avant Bard Theatre is a professional regional company dedicated to producing the best in classics, both time-tested and contemporary. The Scripts In Play Festival is for new plays on classical themes that in some way challenge a contemporary audience’s relationship with history. Past Scripts In Play festivals have included historical dramas, classical adaptations, new translations of historical texts, non-western classics, postmodern adaptations, and more.
About The Opportunity
All submissions will be considered by the Scripts In Play Reading Committee. If selected, plays will be programmed in the festival. Festival plays are assigned a director, who will cast and stage a one-night-only staged reading with free admission.
Playwrights may opt to submit a play for development. Choose this option for plays earlier in their life cycle, or plays seeking substantial changes. Plays for development will be assigned a dramaturg prior to rehearsal, to help produce a new performance draft before Scripts In Play. There is no difference in priority for plays submitted for development.
If selected, playwrights will receive a stipend covering the performance rights for one performance reading.
If not selected, playwrights will receive notice from the reading committee no later than August 30, 2020.
About Scripts In Play 2020-21
Currently, Avant Bard intends to produce Scripts In Play as a live festival. With generous support from the Arlington Commission for the Arts, all Scripts In Play readings would normally take place at Theatre on the Run (3700 S. Four Mile Run). Because of the global coronavirus pandemic, the availability of this venue remains uncertain. Thus, the timeline for production of Scripts In Play is TBD. It is also possible that the Festival will shift to a digitally produced format.
