If you’re excited by the classical frenzy of WSC Avant Bard’s The Bacchae and the primal beats of Tooth of Crime, why not check out a staged reading that mashes up ancient Rome and the glitter of glam rock? On May 30 at 8 p.m. in Artisphere’s Dome Theatre, WSC Avant Bard will present a staged reading of Washington, DC playwright Richard Byrne’s new play Nero/Pseudo.
Taking its start from the notorious story of the fake Emperor Nero who rose up in Greece after the Roman despot’s suicide in 69 AD, Byrne’s work looks at power, celebrity and sex and features eight new songs about the fall of Troy co-written with Chicago alternative rock luminaries Jon Langforf (Mekons, Waco Brothers, Three Johns) and Jim Elkington (The Zincs, The Horse’s Ha). Colin Hovde directs, and the reading features WSC Avant Bard company members Kari Ginsburg, Mundy Spears, James Finley and Heather Haney.
